Using the texts of the speeches by Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X, compare the two leaders on their stances toward gaining Civil Rights for African Americans. How are they similar and different? We often represent them as having opposing views, but they are on the same page in certain respects. Further, WHY have we focused on differences rather than similarities and is that good/bad/neutral for our understandings of these two leaders and their works? You may include the readings from our anthology as well as the readings and videos online.

Define the term “Black Arts Era.” What made this era special? How did the works of this era challenge long held stereotypes of African Americans? Provide examples from the readings.
