After reading the article, consider the challenges facing organizations within the context of your selected article. Describe how the concepts of the article might affect the program you selected in Week 2. For my week two program, I chose a program which I named the Homeless House. It is program for currently homeless individuals over the age of 18 that need help with financial literacy and ability to keep a job. Within this program they will live in the Homeless House, they will be responsible for different jobs in the house such as taking out the trash, helping to set the table, cleaning bathrooms, vacuuming, and other things that will be required of you when you own your own house. Although this is program is for the homeless community, there will be classes which address addiction and mental illness as well. This is because most homeless people have other underlying issues that are the root cause of their homelessness. This is why it is not easy for them to â€œjust get a jobâ€ or â€œsave their money for food and waterâ€.
The article I chose was about advocacy and how important it is for non-profits. This is because non-profits usually represent and advocate for people who do not have a strong voice for their own community. The article explains that agencies should hire a staff member thatâ€™s sole responsibility is advocacy. This is because advocating and getting people/companies to donate is hard work. If you have a lot of other responsibilities other than advocating, it will be extremely hard to do both, and advocating will come last to paperwork. The issue that I see with this in the Homeless House is that starting out, we may not receive the funds the hire an individual just for advocacy, and the board will have to be responsible for that. Many grant funded companies get money to start out with, and then your progress and reporting about what you do with that money is important to prove that you deserve the money. The hope is that after a year, we will be able to hire a person that sole responsibility is advocacy, and maybe we write that person into the grant as a contractor, so we do not have to pay them out of pocket. This will be hard to do if we do not budget correctly in the first couple of years.

The article identifies several ways that nonprofit organizations could receive funding. Itâ€™s recommended that the non-profit organizations partner with other organizations. According to the article, partnering with other organizations involves cooperating with other nonprofit organizations and working with them to partner initiatives that will enhance the individuals fund-raising position. When working with donors, make sure the message about your camp and the projects you want to implement are consistent (Larson, 1998). Involve everyone affiliated with your camp in funding raising (Larson, 1998). Itâ€™s a team effort and many hands make lighter work (Larson, 1998). Instead of spending time on a fund-raiser you think might net $1,000 for your camp, spend your time on a fund-raiser that you hope will net $10,000 (Larson, 1998). Whatever you do for fund-raising, whether writing a grant or planning an event, do it with quality in mind (Larson, 1998). Staffers should attend basic continuing education classes in different topics related to fund-raising (Larson, 1998).
The concepts of the article would positively affect Alston Recovery House by enabling the agency to provide more services beneficial to the clientâ€™s and creating more beds for individuals being discharged from treatment and needing recovery services. With the concepts in the article in place, staff members would be better trained and educated to work with the clients dealing with substance use disorder and mental health issues, which could possibly help to decrease client relapse, and increase the ratings of the organization. The continuing education classes related to fund-raising would be helpful in that staff members would be more knowledgeable on how to conduct fund-raisers, write grants etc. which could be affective in raising the money needed to expand the organization, and offer more to the population being served, such as permanent housing, programs to assist with employment services etc.
