Reading: Never Let Me Go, chapters 7-12

Option 1: Though Never Let Me Go takes place in England, the novel is a mainstay in the traditional canon of global literature. What aspects of the text contribute to its placement in such a canon? What is the connection between Ishiguro’s unadorned writing style and his portrayal of the world? Make sure to choose a passage and closely analyze its specific use of language, metaphor, narration, etc. to provide support for your claims.
Option 2: Dystopian novels are often historically connected to political and social critique. What, exactly, is Ishiguro critiquing in the novel? What is the novel’s stance on genetic science, cloning, humanism, education, and/or government? Choose a passage and explain how it symbolically supports your identification of Ishiguro’s political/societal/cultural views.
