Subprime lending is borrowing money when the borrower had either no credit history or a low credit score. Interest rates for subprime lending are higher because the way it’s seen by the lender, they’re taking a risk with someone who they don’t believe to be ideal borrowers.
I think the CFPB will be valuable in providing protection to consumers because they offer tips such as being careful in accepting a subprime loan because it doesn’t mean you aren’t qualified for prime lending, which has lower interest rates.
There are several options for alternative mortgage loans. The options are listed under their “Understand loan options” page. I found that there was a fairly easy way to get to this page, and they even break up the process by offering breakdowns of loan terms, interest rate types and loan type. I like the organization of the information and believe that because it is so well organized, that this would make for an excellent resource for consumers to not only have but to be able to truly understand. Each subcategory is organized by title, definition, option comparisons, and a “What to Know” section. I would highly recommend this website for consumer’s knowledge.
The way I see it, this website is ideal for consumer education, specifically for mortgage types and options. As far as protection, I would say it would be a good start. If the consumer were to use this resource correctly, I would find it essential to seek education before buying a home. Aside from consumer education, the “Contact Us” page offers phone numbers, mailing address and headquarter addresses. They extend their services by offering their resource to filing a complaint, assuring that they would point you in the right direction.
